Gianpaolo Paglia, an agronomist and PhD in plant genetics born and bred in Maremma, and Justine Keeling, an English marketing manager, bought the estate in 1997. They started making Morellino di Scansano, with the existing 6 Ha of old and high quality producing vineyards, whilst at the same time planting new vineyards using local varieties such as Sangiovese and Alicante.
’’Poggio Argentiera’’ is today composed of two estates situated in two different areas of Tuscany’s Maremma, near the town of Grosseto. Podere Adua, with the head office, cellar and winery, is close to the Maremma Natural Park, in the coastal region of Grosseto. Podere Keeling is found in the hilly area to the North of the Scansano district, towards Monte Amiata. Other old vineyards that have been leased throughout the region are today full part of our production.
Our production phylosopy is to make wines that have a sense of place, where the terroir is allowed to show itself unbiased. Since 2009 we are doing organic farming and we are following a very natural and no-intervention approach in our cellar: most of the wines are not fined or filtered, no addictives or other chemicals are added with the exception of the smallest possibile amount of solfites. For the Sangiovese based wines only medium/large oak casks are used , whilst most of the young wines are aged in stainless-steel or cement vats.
Even though Poggio Argentiera is a young winery, it has already acquired an impressive record of awards and critical acclaim, both in Italy and worldwide,(three glasses from Gambero Rosso Slow Food Guide of Italian Wines, “Vini dell’Eccellenza” from the Espresso Guide of Italian wine, 90 points + scores both in the Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator).
What they say about us…
“…Now the Morellino DOC zone can boast a new great wine…”
Vini d’Italia 2003 Gambero Rosso – Slow Food
“Etoile montante dell’appellation Morellino di Scansano…”
La Revue du Vin de France 2004
“…Able winemaking, first by Luca D’Attoma, now by Fabrizio Moltard, has propelled this producer into the front ranks of the Morellino di Scansano appellation…”
The Wine Advocate – R.Parker Jr.
“…Capatosta emerges from 25-year old Sangiovese vines, and spent 13 months in French oak prior to bottling. It possesses a Bordeaux-like tannin profile with plenty of structure as well as gorgeously sweet black currant fruit intermixed with lead pencil shavings, leather, and spice box. With terrific texture, intensity, sweetness, ripeness, and balance, it is accesible now, but promises to evolve gracefully for 12-15 years. Impressive!” 92 points.
