Capatosta – Morellino di Scansano Riserva DOCG
Grapes: Sangiovese 85%, Ciliegiolo 10% Alicante 5%.
Vines: the best estate vineyards, located in the Comune di Scansano (250 m ASL, North-West, North-East, limestone soils, rich in pebbles, 5680 p/Ha). Production per plant 1 kg of grapes. Vineyards are 10-15 km from the Mediterranean coast, with Mediterranean climate, characterized by moderate winters and sunny, dry and warm spring and summer. Organica growing in conversion since 2009.
Vinification: fermentation in 25 Hl oak casks (open top) and ageing in 10/20 Hl oak oval casks.
Notes: Capatosta (means stubborn) is our best Morellino. It’s the wine that comes from the best Sangiovese vineyards, mostly more than 20 years old. Some of the Ciliegiolo and Grenache grapes used in the blend (that must be minum 85% Sangiovese) come from 40+ year old vines. This wine is always be a benchmark for the Morellino wines, its style has changed through years (first vintage was in 1998), and since the 2009 we have completely abandoned the use of small French oak barrels (225 lt, also called barriques) and embraced a lighter, more pure and intense style by using medium large oak casks (10/20 Hl). Ripe cherry, strawberry and subtle oak notes, velvety and fine grained tannins, and a long, refreshing finish are the main characteristics of this wine, with savoury notes of leather and forest floor developing with age. The wine is ready to drink 3/4 years after the harvest, but can keep for at least 10 years.
